Working with women in Probation - vicarious trauma in probation

Facilitator: Katie Lomas

Presenter: Becky Shepherd, LSBU Criminologist and Napo member

The emotional labour of probation supervision is well known to practitioners. Women clients in particular have overwhelmingly experienced multiple traumas and the supervisory relationship is often intense as well as rewarding. Given the toll this work takes on staff, how do women practitioners cope, and what support do they need?

Following the reunification of probation, and 13 years since the Corston Report introduced the women’s centre model, a London South Bank University research project is being launched at the Napo 2021 WIN fringe meeting.

Becky Shepherd, LSBU criminologist and Napo member, will talk about her previous research on women, anger and childhood trauma, followed by a talk on the research project and the launch of a survey on vicarious trauma for women working with women, which is open to all female practitioners working wholly or mainly with women clients.
